Yara

About Yara

Yara is a city of around 59,000 people in Granma Province, southeastern Cuba. Set in an agricultural region, it holds a notable place in Cuban history and cultural heritage. Points of interest include the Monumento al indio Hatuey, commemorating the Taíno chief who resisted Spanish colonisation, as well as Parque Masó, the Capilla San Francisco de Asís, and the Iglesia Bautista. The city centre also hosts the Estación Yara railway station and the Cine Yara. The literary work Espejo de Paciencia, associated with this region, is considered among the earliest texts in Cuban literary history.
