Situated on a high plateau, most of the country lies above 1,800 metres, making it one of the highest-elevation nations in the world. The capital, Maseru, is located in the west near the South African border. The landscape is defined by the Maluti Mountains and the Drakensberg range. The population is predominantly made up of the Basotho people, and the country is a constitutional monarchy.
