About New Caledonia

New Caledonia is a French special collectivity located in the South Pacific, roughly 1,500 kilometres east of Australia. The main island, Grande Terre, is encircled by one of the world's longest barrier reef lagoon systems, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The territory also includes the Loyalty Islands and several smaller island groups. Its population comprises Kanak people, Caldoches of European descent, and other communities. Nouméa serves as the capital and main urban centre. New Caledonia holds substantial nickel deposits and ranks among the world's leading nickel producers.
