About Nauru
Nauru is an island nation in the central Pacific Ocean and one of the smallest countries in the world, covering roughly 21 square kilometres. It lies about 42 kilometres south of the Equator and has a population of fewer than 15,000 people. The island's economy was once driven by phosphate mining, which brought considerable wealth, but reserves are now largely depleted. The interior bears the marks of decades of open-cast mining, while the narrow coastal belt is home to most of the population. Tourist infrastructure is limited, making it a destination suited to independent travellers.
