About Solomon Islands

The Solomon Islands is a sovereign archipelago nation in the southwestern Pacific Ocean, situated northeast of Australia. The country comprises around 900 islands, with Guadalcanal being the largest and home to the capital, Honiara. The population of approximately 700,000 is predominantly Melanesian, spread across numerous islands. The economy relies mainly on forestry, fishing, and agriculture. The islands are characterised by dense rainforest, coral reefs, and remarkable cultural diversity, with dozens of local languages spoken. The Solomon Islands gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1978.
