Sierra Leone is a country in West Africa, bordered by Guinea to the north and east, Liberia to the southeast, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. Its capital, Freetown, was established in the late 18th century as a settlement for freed slaves. The country is noted for its long sandy beaches, tropical rainforest, and significant deposits of diamonds and other minerals. Sierra Leone experienced a prolonged civil war that ended in 2002 and has since been engaged in a process of reconstruction and development.
