About São Tomé and Príncipe

São Tomé and Príncipe is an island nation in the Gulf of Guinea, roughly 300 kilometres off the coast of Central Africa. One of Africa's smallest states, it comprises two main islands and several smaller islets, all of volcanic origin. Portuguese colonial history has left a lasting mark on the country's language, architecture, and culture. Dense tropical rainforests, former cocoa and coffee plantations, and a rich biodiversity — including numerous endemic bird species — make it a destination suited to nature-focused travellers. The capital, São Tomé, is located on the larger of the two main islands.
