09 Horin-ji

Hōrin-ji is the ninth temple on the Shikoku 88-temple pilgrimage circuit, one of the most important Buddhist pilgrimage routes in Japan, tracing the footsteps of the monk Kōbō Daishi (Kūkai) across the island of Shikoku. The temple belongs to the Kōyasan branch of Shingon Buddhism, an esoteric school founded in the 9th century that emphasizes mantras, mudras, and mandalas as paths to enlightenment. Pilgrims completing the full Shikoku Henro walk roughly 1,200 kilometers in total, arriving here in traditional white robes and conical bamboo hats. Whether visited as an active pilgrim or a cultural observer, the temple offers incense smoke, prayer bells, and the quiet, layered atmosphere characteristic of Shingon sacred sites.
