Guaraní International Airport sits roughly 30 kilometres west of Ciudad del Este and is Paraguay's second-largest airport after Asunción's Silvio Pettirossi. Built in 1993 on the site of the former Alejo García airfield, it takes its name from the Guaraní people, the largest indigenous group in the country. For most travellers it functions as a gateway to the tri-border region where Paraguay, Brazil, and Argentina converge.
