Aleksandrovo tumulus

The Aleksandrovo tumulus is a burial mound built around 400 BC near the village of Aleksandrovo in the Haskovo region of southeastern Bulgaria. It was discovered by chance in December 2000 during earthworks — an accident that accounts for the exceptional preservation of its interior painted chamber. The circular burial room features figurative frescoes depicting a hunting scene and a symposium, considered among the finest surviving examples of Thracian funerary painting in the Balkans. A full-scale replica of the tomb is open to visitors, while the original chamber remains restricted to researchers to protect the fragile murals. The site is currently on Bulgaria's tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage nomination.
