Alte Inselkirche

The Alte Inselkirche on Spiekeroog is the oldest surviving church on any of the East Frisian islands, built in 1696 in an understated brick baroque style. Its construction followed a period of devastating storm surges that had repeatedly reshaped the island in the 17th century, making the church both a spiritual and communal anchor for a small, isolated population. Listed as a protected monument in Lower Saxony, it stands in the car-free village center of Spiekeroog, surrounded by old sea captains' houses. The interior is spare and unadorned, lending it a quiet, almost timeless atmosphere. It is open Tuesday through Friday from 11 am to noon.
