Amaravati

Amaravati is the planned de facto capital of the South Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 22 October 2015 on the southern bank of the Krishna River. Its name deliberately invokes the ancient city of Amaravati, once the seat of the Shatavahana dynasty and a center of early Buddhist stupa art. The master plan envisions more than half of the city's 217 square kilometers as green space and ten percent as water surfaces — a strikingly high ratio for a new capital. Construction has been politically contentious and repeatedly delayed, leaving the city in an early development stage as of 2024, with government buildings and riverside infrastructure as the most visible elements.
