Austurstræti

Austurstræti is a short pedestrian street in central Reykjavík, running westward from Lækjargata and connecting seamlessly into Bankastræti and the better-known Laugavegur shopping strip. It functions as the entry point to the city's main commercial and nightlife corridor. On 18 April 2007, a fire destroyed two historic buildings along the street, leaving a rare gap in the otherwise dense downtown fabric. Today the street is lined with cafés, small shops, and bars, serving primarily as a transit axis and first orientation point for visitors to the city center.
