Azalea and Rhododendron Park Kromlau

The Azalea and Rhododendron Park Kromlau covers around 200 hectares in the Görlitz district of Saxony, making it the largest open-air rhododendron planting in Germany. Laid out in the 19th century as an English landscape park by estate owner Friedrich Hermann Rötschke, it weaves forested hills, ponds, and a sweeping network of romantic footpaths across former manor grounds. The centrepiece is the Rakotzbrücke, a neo-Gothic natural stone bridge whose arch reflects in the dark pond water to form a near-perfect circle — a composition that draws photographers from across Europe. Peak season falls in May, when hundreds of thousands of rhododendron and azalea blooms carpet the park in shades of pink, red, and white. Admission is free year-round and the grounds are open at all times.
