Balatlar Church

The Balatlar Church in Sinop's Ada quarter is an early Byzantine basilica dedicated to the Koimesis — the Dormition of the Virgin — and ranks among the oldest surviving Christian structures on Turkey's Black Sea coast. It was built during late antiquity when Sinope was a prominent port city of the Pontic region, with later Byzantine modifications layered onto the original fabric over centuries. Today the site presents itself as an atmospheric ruin with a legible apse and masonry from several distinct building phases, progressively uncovered by archaeological excavations. The church sits largely off the international tourist circuit, making it a quietly revealing stop for visitors interested in Byzantine archaeology.
