Banpo

Also known as: Banpocun, Banpo Site

Banpo village site east of modern Xi'an is one of China's best-preserved Neolithic settlements, belonging to the Yangshao culture (c. 4800–3600 BCE). Discovered in 1953, excavations revealed circular mud-walled houses, burial grounds, and ceramic remains. The site is a protected national monument of the People's Republic of China. A large museum building now covers part of the original excavation, allowing visitors to walk above exposed ground-level remains.
