Florence Baptistery of St. John
Florence
The Baptistry of St. John is the largest baptistery in Italy, standing directly west of Pisa Cathedral on the Campo dei Miracoli. Construction began in 1152 in the Romanesque style, but Gothic decorative galleries and sculptures by Nicola and Giovanni Pisano were added over the following centuries, leaving the facade as a layered record of medieval ambition. Inside, the octagonal baptismal font carved by Guido Bigarelli in 1246 dominates the interior. The building is particularly prized for its extraordinary acoustics: the dome produces a sustained natural echo of several seconds, a phenomenon that guides still demonstrate with live singing. Protected as an Italian national monument and part of the UNESCO-listed Campo dei Miracoli ensemble, entry requires a ticket shared with the other monuments on the square.
