Saint Peter in Chains

San Pietro in Vincoli — "Saint Peter in Chains" — is one of Rome's most rewarding church visits, famous for Michelangelo's monumental Moses (1513–1516), one of the supreme achievements of Renaissance sculpture. The church also holds the chains said to have bound St. Peter during his imprisonments in Jerusalem and Rome, displayed in a golden reliquary beneath the high altar. On the Oppian Hill near the Colosseum, it is a must-see that rewards even visitors who normally skip churches.
