Basilica of St. Bartholomew on the Island

San Bartolomeo all'Isola on the Tiber Island is a place of triple history — built over the foundations of an ancient Temple of Aesculapius (289 BCE), established as a church around 998 by Holy Roman Emperor Otto III, and since 2002 serving as a memorial to the martyrs of the 20th century from all faiths. The island's two-thousand-year association with healing and faith makes this one of Rome's most richly layered and moving sites.
