Bergkirchweih

The Bergkirchweih — locally known simply as 'der Berg' or in Franconian dialect 'Berch' — is Erlangen's twelve-day folk festival held annually around Whitsun on the wooded Burgberg hill, a tradition stretching back to the 18th century. Its defining feature is a row of 15 beer cellars operated by local and regional breweries, whose barrels are kept cool in sandstone-cut chambers beneath the hillside — a pre-industrial refrigeration technique that gives the festival its singular atmosphere. Towering lindens, chestnut trees, and oaks shade hundreds of thousands of visitors who drink outdoors each year, while Erlangen's large student population drives a nightlife energy that sets the Berg well apart from an ordinary funfair. Franconian sausages, fairground rides, and roving showmen complete the picture.
