Bismarckturm

The Bismarck Tower on the 270-metre Stahlsberg near Ballenstedt-Opperode is one of roughly 240 such towers built across the German Empire to honor Chancellor Otto von Bismarck. Its construction history is unusually drawn out: groundwork began in 1914–1915 but the tower was not completed until 1930–1931, with the First World War and the turbulent Weimar years interrupting the project for over a decade. Listed as a protected cultural monument, it stands as a physical record of the nationalist Bismarck cult that gripped Wilhelmine Germany. From the top, visitors take in wide views across the northern Harz range and into the lowland plain beyond. The tower is reached via forest hiking trails and pairs naturally with a visit to nearby Ballenstedt Palace.
