The Certosa di Pavia is one of the most impressive monastery complexes in Italy, built from 1396 by Gian Galeazzo Visconti, Duke of Milan, originally intended as a dynastic mausoleum for the Visconti family. Construction spanned nearly a century and produced a remarkable blend of late Gothic structure and early Renaissance ornament. The church's marble facade is considered one of the most elaborate in northern Italy, covered with carved reliefs, busts, and decorative niches. A small Cistercian community still inhabits the complex today, and parts of the monastery are open to visitors. The vast cloisters offer a rare atmosphere of quietude, making the Certosa one of the most rewarding day trips from Milan or Pavia.
