Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, formerly the Prince of Wales Museum of Western India, is one of India's leading museums, located in south Mumbai between the Bombay High Court and the Gateway of India. It was conceived to mark the visit of the future King George V in 1905 and opened in 1922. The Indo-Saracenic building with its dome, pointed-arch windows and lotus motifs was designed by George Wittet, who also produced the Gateway of India. The collection runs to about 50,000 objects divided into art, archaeology and natural history. Highlights include medieval Indian sculpture, Mughal and Rajput miniature paintings, East Asian porcelain and the European paintings bequeathed by Sir Ratan Tata. The museum building was inscribed as part of the UNESCO World Heritage site "Victorian Gothic and Art Deco Ensembles of Mumbai" in 2018.
