The church of San Frumenzio ai Prati Fiscali sits in the northern Roman neighbourhood of Prati Fiscali and was built in 1984 as a parish church. Its patron, Saint Frumentius, was a 4th-century Ethiopian bishop regarded as the Apostle of Ethiopia – an unusual dedication for a Roman suburban church. Pope John Paul II elevated it to a titular church in 1988, meaning it serves as an honorary seat for a cardinal within the papal system. The building is typical of the austere post-war modern architecture that spread across Rome's outer districts from the 1960s onwards.
