Saint John at the Latin Gate

San Giovanni a Porta Latina is an Early Christian basilica on the inner-city stretch of the ancient Via Latina, right against the Aurelian Walls. Its foundation goes back to the early 5th century, with a traditional dating of 401. Restored several times, the church still preserves the layout of a three-nave basilica with a free-standing tower and a fountain in front. Notable are the 12th-century fresco cycles with Old Testament scenes, among Rome's most important surviving medieval wall paintings. The church is an Italian national monument. Visitors experience one of the quietest ancient-medieval sacred sites in Rome, away from mass tourism.
