Irrland in Kevelaer-Twisteden in the Lower Rhine region started in 1999 as a farmyard with a simple corn maze and has since grown into a roughly 30-hectare leisure park drawing around one million visitors a year. In 2012 it opened what is claimed to be the world's first playable airport — a large-scale slide complex where visitors act out the roles of passengers, baggage handlers, and boarding crews. The original corn maze remains the park's centrepiece, its layout changing each season to keep repeat visitors guessing. The park's farm origins still show in its open-air, agricultural setting along the flat Lower Rhine countryside.
