Abeno Harukas
Kyoto
Kyoto's oldest Zen temple (1202), celebrated for its spectacular dragon ceiling painting.
Kennin-ji in Kyoto's Higashiyama district is one of Japan's oldest Zen temples, founded in 1202. As the head temple of its Rinzai branch, it belongs to the Kyoto Gozan, the five most important Zen temples of the city. The most celebrated artwork is the dramatic dragon ceiling painting in the main hall. The temple grounds include well-kept stone gardens and quiet covered walkways that invite lingering. Despite its location in the lively Gion district, the temple offers a surprisingly reflective retreat.
