Kernberge und Wöllmisse bei Jena

The Kernberge und Wöllmisse nature reserve is the largest protected area both within the city of Jena and the surrounding Saale-Holzland-Kreis in Thuringia. The forested hill terrain stretches east of Jena, flanked by the Saale river to the west. Formally designated a nature reserve in 2004, the area is shielded from development and offers a network of trails through mixed woodland — a quiet counterpoint to the university city just below, well-suited for walking and nature observation.
