Mount Diablo is a distinctive isolated peak in Contra Costa County, east of the San Francisco Bay Area. Rising to 3,849 feet (1,173 m), it stands out so clearly from its surroundings that it is visible from almost everywhere in the Bay Area on a clear day. The mountain forms the heart of Mount Diablo State Park, a 50,000-acre protected area with trails through chaparral, oak woodland, and open grassland. From the summit, views on clear days extend to the Sierra Nevada to the east and the Pacific coast to the west. The characteristic double-pyramid silhouette — formed by Mount Diablo and the nearby North Peak — is a recognizable landmark throughout the region.
