The Cluny Museum

The Musee de Cluny - officially the Musee national du Moyen Age - stands on the Boulevard Saint-Michel and combines two remarkable buildings: the late Gothic Paris residence of the abbots of Cluny from 1485 and the surviving rooms of the Gallo-Roman thermae from the first century. Its collection is regarded as the world's most important holding of medieval art. The greatest treasure is the cycle of six Lady and the Unicorn tapestries, woven in Brussels around 1500 and shown in a dedicated rotunda. The original heads of the Kings of Judah from Notre-Dame, hacked off the west front in 1793 and rediscovered in a Paris courtyard in 1977, are also on display. After a long restoration the museum reopened in 2022 with a chronological route and full step-free access.
