Musée de Montmartre

The Musee de Montmartre at 12 Rue Cortot occupies the oldest building on the hill, a seventeenth-century country house where Renoir, Suzanne Valadon, Maurice Utrillo, Raoul Dufy and many other artists lived and worked. Renoir painted his Bal du moulin de la Galette here in 1876. The museum opened in 1960 and has been listed as a Musee de France since 2003. It displays original Chat Noir posters, paintings by Montmartre artists, and a faithfully reconstructed studio of Suzanne Valadon based on period photographs. The three Jardins Renoir are among the loveliest gardens in Paris and look directly onto the city's last surviving working vineyard.
