piazza della Santissima Annunziata

The Piazza della Santissima Annunziata is one of Florence's most harmoniously composed Renaissance squares, enclosed on three sides by arcaded loggias that create a rare sense of spatial unity. The eastern portico belongs to Brunelleschi's Ospedale degli Innocenti, completed in 1419 and widely considered among the earliest pure Renaissance buildings anywhere in Europe — its slender columns and ceramic roundels by Andrea della Robbia remain intact. The basilica at the square's head houses a revered 14th-century image of the Virgin, said by tradition to have been finished by an angel's hand, drawing pilgrims to the site for centuries. A bronze equestrian statue of Ferdinando I de' Medici by Giambologna anchors the center. Slightly removed from Florence's main tourist corridors, the piazza rewards visitors with a quieter, more local atmosphere, especially in the long evening light.
