Pioneer Park

Pioneer Park sits atop Telegraph Hill in San Francisco's North Beach neighborhood, established in 1876 to mark the United States Centennial on the site of a former Marine Telegraph Station that once signaled incoming ships across the bay. The park's defining landmark is Coit Tower, a slender Art Deco column completed in 1933 with a $118,000 bequest from Lillie Hitchcock Coit — an eccentric civic figure with a lifelong devotion to the city's fire department. Inside, a sweeping New Deal fresco cycle painted by 26 artists depicts California working life during the Depression. The summit commands 360-degree views over the Bay, Alcatraz, and the downtown skyline, while the park's staircases — lined with private gardens and wild parrots of the cherry-headed conure variety — make the climb itself a distinctive part of the experience.
