Berlin
Bornholmer Straße S-Bahn station in the Prenzlauer Berg district handles around 60,000 passengers daily, but its place in history far exceeds its role as a commuter stop. The adjacent Bösebrücke — a listed iron railway bridge — became the first East-West Berlin border crossing to open on the night of 9 November 1989. Overwhelmed border guards, faced with mounting crowds and conflicting orders, allowed East Berliners to pass just before midnight in a spontaneous decision that set the night's events in motion. An information stele on the bridge now marks the spot. The station itself sits at the junction of the Nordbahn and Stettiner Bahn lines and is fully wheelchair accessible.
