Kargil is a small town in the union territory of Ladakh in northern India, situated in the Suru River valley at an elevation of roughly 2,700 metres. It serves as the second-largest urban centre in Ladakh and a key stopover on the highway linking Leh and Srinagar. The surrounding landscape is defined by stark high-altitude terrain; nearby landmarks such as the Shingo River, Black Mountain, and the historically significant Point 5140 reflect the region's eventful past. Kargil Airport provides air connectivity to the rest of India.
