About Karbala

Karbala lies in central Iraq, roughly 100 kilometres south-west of Baghdad, and is one of the holiest cities in Shia Islam. Home to around 690,000 people, it serves as the capital of Karbala Governorate. The city is best known as the site of the shrine of Imam Hussein ibn Ali, a grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, drawing millions of pilgrims each year, particularly during the Arbaeen commemoration. Beyond its religious significance, the city has a full range of urban amenities and neighbourhoods, including areas around شارع العلقمي and the recreational facility منتجع ريحانة الترفيهي.
