Yungay

About Yungay

Yungay sits at roughly 2,500 metres above sea level in the Callejón de Huaylas valley of Peru's Áncash region, flanked by the Cordillera Blanca and Cordillera Negra. The town carries a profound history: in 1970, an earthquake triggered a massive debris avalanche from Nevado Huascarán that buried most of the original settlement. Campo Santo Yungay now serves as a memorial to the victims. The surrounding area offers access to the Llanganuco lakes, the Portachuelo de Llanganuco mountain pass, and associated points of interest including a Burial Chamber and terraced viewpoints.
