About Cape Verde

Cape Verde is an island nation in the Atlantic Ocean, situated roughly 570 kilometres off the west coast of Africa. The archipelago comprises ten main islands divided into the Barlavento (Windward) and Sotavento (Leeward) groups. Portuguese navigators reached the uninhabited islands in the 15th century, and the country gained independence in 1975. It is widely regarded as one of Africa's most stable democracies. Visitors encounter a varied landscape of volcanic peaks and sandy beaches, alongside a distinctive Creole culture shaped by morna music, famously associated with the late singer Cesária Évora.
