About Ecuador
Ecuador sits on the northwestern coast of South America, straddling the Equator from which it takes its name. The country encompasses four distinct geographic regions: the Pacific coast, the Andean highlands, the Amazon basin to the east, and the Galápagos Islands in the Pacific Ocean. The capital, Quito, stands at over 2,800 metres in an Andean valley. Ecuador is considered one of the world's most biodiverse countries, offering travellers a remarkable range of landscapes — from tropical rainforests and active volcanoes to unique marine ecosystems — within a relatively compact area.
