About North Macedonia
North Macedonia is a landlocked country in the western Balkans, a NATO member since 2020 and a long-standing candidate for EU membership. Its capital, Skopje, lies along the Vardar, the country's principal river. The population is predominantly Macedonian-speaking and Orthodox Christian, with a sizable Albanian-speaking minority in the west. Lake Ohrid in the southwest, recognised as a UNESCO natural and cultural World Heritage Site, is one of the oldest lakes in the world and a central draw for visitors to the region.
