The 20 Yanvar station is part of Line 2 of the Baku Metro, opened on 31 December 1985 during the Soviet era, when stations on the network were typically built with marble-clad walls and ornate ceiling reliefs. Its name commemorates 20 January 1990, when Soviet troops stormed Baku and killed numerous civilians in an event remembered in Azerbaijan as Black January. Today it functions as an ordinary transit stop in Baku's daily commuter network.
