The Calatrava tower that never got built

80 South Street is a vacant lot in Manhattan's Financial District with an outsized architectural history. In 2003, Santiago Calatrava designed a striking residential tower here: stacked, offset glass cubes that would have reshaped lower Manhattan's skyline. The 2008 financial crisis killed that vision. A replacement project followed under Chinese conglomerate China Oceanwide, but collapsed in 2021 when Evergrande's real estate crisis spread through Chinese property markets. The site today sits empty — a quiet reminder of how global finance shapes, and unshapes, city skylines.
