Aa Darvoza (West Gate)

The Ota Darvoza — the western main gate of Khiva's walled inner city, Ichan Qal'a — was built between 1828 and 1829 under the Khanate of Khiva and has served as the citadel's principal entrance ever since. The squat mud-brick portal follows the classic Central Asian khanate gate form: a massive arched passageway set within heavily buttressed rammed-earth shoulders. Khiva occupied a strategic node on the eastern Silk Road, and passing through this gate once meant entering one of the most intact medieval urban ensembles in Central Asia — a status recognised by UNESCO World Heritage designation in 1990. Today it is the natural starting point for exploring the Ichan Qal'a, with rooftop views from the gate tower revealing a dense skyline of minarets, madrasas, and caravanserais that is especially striking in the late afternoon light.
