Abbazia di San Colombano

The Abbey of San Colombano in Bobbio was founded in 614 by Columban, an Irish peregrinus monk from Luxeuil, who died here the following year and was quickly venerated as a saint, turning the site into a pilgrimage destination. In the early medieval period the abbey became a major intellectual centre: its library was among the largest in Europe and preserved manuscripts — many now lost — that shaped continental scholarship. The monastery also served as a stronghold against Arianism in Lombard northern Italy. Dissolved under Napoleonic rule in 1803, parts of the Renaissance-era complex survive in adapted use. The crypt housing Columban's relics remains an active place of Catholic devotion, and the site draws visitors interested in early Christian monasticism and medieval manuscript culture.
