Abtei Morienval

The church of Notre-Dame in Morienval, a quiet village in the Oise département north of Paris, is one of the most significant Romanesque structures in the Hauts-de-France region. Originally the abbey church of a Benedictine convent, it was built in three phases from roughly the mid-11th century onward. Architectural historians have pointed to its ambulatory rib vaults — unusually early for the period — as a possible proto-Gothic prototype predating the canonical birth of Gothic architecture at Saint-Denis. The site was among the very first monuments listed when France established its historical landmark register in 1840. Now serving as a parish church, the largely unrestored interior and well-preserved apse cluster reward visitors with an austere Romanesque atmosphere rarely encountered this intact.
