Admiral Makarov monument

The monument to Stepan Ossipowitsch Makarov stands in Vladivostok as a tribute to one of 19th-century Russia's most versatile naval figures. Makarov was simultaneously a vice admiral, oceanographer, and polar explorer who championed the development of icebreaker technology — he was the driving force behind the construction of the legendary icebreaker Yermak. His naval career ended abruptly in 1904 when his flagship Petropavlovsk was sunk by a Japanese mine off Port Arthur during the Russo-Japanese War. The memorial commemorates a figure whose scientific legacy in oceanography rivaled his military reputation.
