Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport sits southwest of the city near El Altet and handles roughly 20 million passengers annually, making it Spain's fifth-busiest airport as of 2025. In 2021 it was officially renamed in honour of Miguel Hernández, the poet and playwright born in nearby Orihuela in 1910, widely regarded as one of the most important Spanish literary voices of the 20th century. The airport serves as the main gateway to the Costa Blanca and the broader Alicante and Murcia regions.
