Ubud Monkey Forest

The Ubud Monkey Forest is a roughly four-hectare nature reserve in the heart of Ubud, Bali, where over 1,000 free-roaming long-tailed macaques move through ancient banyan trees and moss-draped stone carvings. At the park's center stands Pura Dalem Agung Padangtegal, an active Hindu temple dedicated to the death deity Betara Prajapati, regularly used by Balinese worshippers for rituals and cremation ceremonies. The temple grounds blur the line between wildlife sanctuary and sacred space — monkeys are considered holy in the Hindu context, which explains their protected status and entirely uninhibited behavior around visitors. Narrow forest paths wind past demon reliefs and incense offerings; arriving early in the morning, before tour groups, reveals the site's genuinely spiritual atmosphere.
