Ahmadnagar Fort

Ahmadnagar Fort stands about one kilometre east of the city centre of Ahmednagar on the Deccan Plateau in Maharashtra. Built by the Nizam Shahi sultanate in the late 15th century, it withstood multiple Mughal sieges before eventually falling to British control. Its most resonant chapter came during World War II, when colonial authorities imprisoned Jawaharlal Nehru here between 1942 and 1945 — years during which he wrote 'The Discovery of India', one of the foundational texts of modern Indian thought. The fort remains partly occupied by the Indian Army, limiting civilian access, but its circuit of bastions and a dry moat convey the scale of its original Deccan military engineering.
