Blackness Castle

Blackness Castle is a 15th-century fortress perched on a rocky promontory on the south shore of the Firth of Forth, about 28 kilometres west of Edinburgh in the Falkirk council area. Its unusual ship-like plan — a long narrow courtyard with a bow-shaped tower — made it one of Scotland's most formidable coastal strongholds, serving as a royal garrison, a state prison for high-ranking prisoners during the Stuart era, and later an ammunition depot. It holds Scotland's highest Category A listed building status and is a Scheduled Ancient Monument, managed today by Historic Scotland. Open April through September (daily) and limited winter hours, the castle draws around 77,000 visitors a year. The battlements offer sweeping views across the Firth, and the site is recognisable to international audiences as a filming location for the TV series Outlander.
